Earthquake Swarm Off the Coast of Vancouver Island
At Least Three Earthquakes Felt in BC
222 Kilometer Northwest of Vancouver
A minor 4.9 magnitude earthquake shook BC's northern and central Vancouver Island this morning. The earthquake was felt by people as far away as Kelowna. It was one of three earthquakes that have been felt in the area in the past few hours.
The earthquake swarm began at around 6:30 AM this morning. The first earthquake was a 4.2 magnitude and was followed by a 4.9 magnitude earthquake at 7:00 AM. The third earthquake was a 3.8 magnitude and occurred at 7:30 AM.
There have been no reports of damage from the earthquakes. However, the swarm is a reminder that the west coast of Vancouver Island is an active seismic zone.
Scientists are monitoring the situation and say that there is no reason to be concerned at this time. However, they are advising people to be prepared for aftershocks.
