2022 French Open: an incredible match, an incredible outcome
An injury-hit Alexander Zverev retires in the second set of his semi-final against Rafael Nadal
Alexander Zverev's hopes of reaching his first Grand Slam final were ended in heartbreaking fashion on Friday when he was forced to retire from his semi-final against Rafael Nadal at the French Open.
The German, who had been pushed to the limit by Nadal in the first set, rolled his ankle awkwardly at the end of the 12th game and was unable to continue. Nadal, who was leading 7-6 (8), 6-6 at the time, was magnanimous in victory, saying that he felt "very sorry" for Zverev.
"It's a super tough moment," said Nadal. "He was playing amazing. I wish him all the best and a very fast recovery."
Zverev, who had been in excellent form coming into the tournament, was clearly devastated by his injury. He had been playing some of the best tennis of his career and had looked like he had a real chance of beating Nadal.
"I'm so disappointed that I had to retire," said Zverev. "I was playing well and I thought I had a chance to win. But it's just one of those things that happens in sport. I'm going to try to stay positive and come back stronger next time."
Nadal, who is now one win away from his 14th French Open title, will face Casper Ruud in the final on Sunday.
